New Year’s Resolutions When You Have MS
If you, or someone you love, suffers from MS, you’ll be well versed in the varied and challenging symptoms of this chronic neurological disease with no cure. Neuropathic pain, vision loss, fatigue, and balance issues are just some of the symptoms, and everyone with MS has a unique experience.
Over the years, MS takes its toll on a person physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially.
That’s why now is the perfect time to make a fresh commitment to yourself that you’re going to get the best possible care in 2022. Don’t you deserve it? We think so.
Let’s look at 5 key New Year’s resolutions for those suffering from MS.
1. Prioritizing wellness
Putting yourself first is not selfish when you have MS, it’s essential. The time has come to prioritize your health and wellbeing. Sure, not easy when you have responsibilities. However small things such as an improved sleep routine, better diet/ nutrition, more exercise, and relaxation cost nothing and help you make great strides in your overall health.
Some find that Tai Chi, long baths, or meditation calm the mind and others swear by an anti-inflammatory diet.
2. Exploring aids
Anything that helps you to cope with MS is worth discovering in 2022. New helpful aids for MS sufferers are constantly being launched and can improve their quality of life. Find out more about assistive technologies such as utensils or orthotic aids, home or car modifications, and home help.
3. Medical care
Are you happy with the medical care that you’re currently receiving? Do you feel like you’re being listened to and that your best interests are at heart, or that your condition is being carefully managed? If the answer is no, 2022 is about doing your research and surrounding yourself with the best possible medical care.
4. Support network
It’s essential for anyone with MS to have people who are in their corner because this is a load that is too heavy to carry on your own. Maybe it’s a close family member who advocates for you and listens on those days when you feel defeated, helping you to fight one more day. Perhaps it’s a local community or online support group, sharing information, advice, and tips, and offering friendly chats. Everyone needs someone to lean on.
5. Avoiding triggers
The key to wellness when living with MS is self-care, and part of that is avoiding things that trigger poor health. Stress and exertion can lead to burnout and must be avoided. Setting firm boundaries, asking for help, and learning to say no are essential skills that you must learn in 2022.
